Salento
Mainly flat, this area of Apulia is rich in agricultural business, characterized with many centuries old olive groves, red land divided by ancient stone walls and the amazing area of Lecce, with splendid smaller locations along the Ionio and Adriatic coast as Gallipoli, Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca and so on. Visiting the Ionio Coast you will be striked by the astonishing sandy beaches with clear cristalline water, competing, in fact, with the Sardinia coasts regarding natural coast beauties: Lido Silvana, Marina di Lizzano, Campomarino di Maruggio, Porto Cesareo, Gallipoli, Ugento, Santa Maria di Leuca, Otranto, Torre dell’Orso and Marina d’Ostuni. All towns in this area were constructed under a strong Baroque influence, as the stone used to build houses, churches and villas is the softer, white colored limestone, ideal to decorate arcades, doors and windows with flowers, saints and statues. Salento hosts also the famous wine cellars producing Salice Salentino, Negramaro and so on, ideal to accompany the local bounties and preparations of “Cucina Pugliese”
